Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting your jiu jitsu journey.

Getting Started

Where is DEN BJJ located?
We are at 16701 E Iliff Ave Unit C-12, Aurora, CO 80013 — just east of I-225.
Do you serve the Aurora, Colorado area?
Yes. We are based in Aurora, CO and train adults and kids from across the east Denver metro — including Centennial, Parker, and Englewood.
Do I need experience to start?
Nope. Most people who walk in have never trained anything.
What should I wear to my first class?
Just wear workout clothes — t-shirt and shorts or joggers work fine. We'll tell you about the gi later.
What age do you accept for kids?
Our kids program is for ages 6-13.
What does the free trial include?
Seven days, unlimited classes. We don't ask for a card.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?
Yes. We teach you to tap early and train smart. Most people never get hurt.

Training

How often should I train?
Start with 2-3 times a week and see how you feel. You'll figure out your rhythm.
What's your training philosophy?
We teach you why things work, not just how to do them. You'll drill, spar, and figure out your own game.
Do you do competitions?
Compete if you want. We'll support you. But it's never required.
What's open mat?
It's just open sparring time for everyone. Always free.

Membership

Can I pause my membership?
Yes. Email us at [email protected] and we'll pause it — no charges while paused, and you can resume whenever you're ready.
How do I cancel?
Email us at [email protected] and we'll cancel it. No contracts, no hoops — it takes effect at the end of your current billing period.
Do you offer a family discount?
Yes. One member pays their normal membership, and every additional person in the same household is $100 a month. There is no minimum household size and no separate family plan to sign up for.

Safety & Safeguarding

How do I report a safety concern or misconduct?
Email our Designated Safeguarding Contact at [email protected] — put "Safeguarding Report" in the subject line — or use the report form at https://denbjj.com/safeguards. You can also contact the US Center for SafeSport at 1-833-587-7233, the Colorado Child Abuse Hotline at 1-844-264-5437, or RAINN at 1-800-656-4673. You do not need proof before reporting — a good-faith concern is enough.
What safety measures are in place for kids classes?
Security cameras are in operation throughout the training area at all times. Parents and guardians have a dedicated observation area to watch every class. No instructor will conduct one-on-one private instruction with a minor in any unobserved space — a second adult or parent must be present. All paid instructors complete background checks and SafeSport training before working with members.
Are instructors SafeSport trained?
Yes. All instructors complete SafeSport training, which covers mandatory reporting, sexual misconduct awareness, and athlete protection. Instructors are mandatory reporters under Colorado law and will report reasonable suspicion of child abuse or neglect to law enforcement immediately.
Does DEN BJJ have a formal safeguarding policy?
Yes. Our full safeguarding policy — including prohibited conduct, reporting procedures, and external resources — is published at https://denbjj.com/safeguards.
